About Ruth

I grew up on the Black Isle, a small peninsula in the Scottish Highlands, and I’m a professional baker and writer. In 2012, I founded Black Isle Bakery, and for nearly a decade, I had the pleasure of baking sweet and savoury specialties for a terrific community of customers. I closed the bakery in 2021 and am now focusing on new creative projects.

My work has been featured by Apartamento, the BBC, Monocle, Wallpaper*, ZEITmagazin, and many others. I’m currently working on my first book: a collection of baking recipes and their connection to the Black Isle. While I work on my book, I’m publishing recipes here for the more informal and simple dishes I cook at home. My newsletter Black Isle Baking in which I share a personal essay and a related recipe is available on Substack.
